Homework

Your child will be taking two reading tests each Friday from their CORE Reading book.  One test is for comprehension and the other is for vocabulary. We discuss and read each story together in class. They will be bringing their book home to review for the tests each week by rereading the story with you.  This is a very important part of their homework.  Please look for that book and work with your child on the comprehension and vocabulary of that story.

I am sending home a reading strategy flow map that will be used when answering comprehension questions from a passage that is a homework assignment.  It is bright yellow, on card stock paper, and is encouraged to stay in their blue communication folder. Students will have a passage two nights a week to practice from. We will review it together the following day at school. A sample flow map and passage is also included. I have stapled a sample passage that has followed the flow map.  Please keep that sheet at home to refer to.  Learning how to follow these strategies will benefit your child’s comprehension. We are also following those reading strategies in class.  We will be using these strategies the entire school year.

Remember, students should be reading nightly their reading counts book. Each quarter there is an expectation of how many chapter books they are required to read. Once they have taken the test they will earn a “bug”. If the student does not pass (below a 70%), you will receive a read Test Approval paper to sign. When you feel they are ready they may retake the test.

Studying spelling nightly is a great practice. We work on spelling to improve our fluency. Weekly spelling tests will also include dictation sentences.

Math will be given each night. Math homework is based off of their understanding of the lesson given that day or a practice page from a previous lesson. Therefore, students should be able to do math independently. Multiplication tests will be given monthly.

Please sign the assignment planner each night indicating that you have read it and that all homework is completed. The assignment planner is also another way for us to communicate. My expectation from our 3rd graders is that homework is done nightly, reading textbooks are brought back daily, planners are signed and returned, and blue folders are brought back daily. It is their responsibility, not the parents. J
Thank you!
